An “idiot” who breached Covid regulations by going to a 21st birthday party was handed a £250 fine today.

Craigavon Magistrate's Court heard that when police were called to a house party in Lurgan on February 12 this year, they found a total of 17 people in the ten bedroom property.

A prosecuting lawyer told the court that while 14 others were dealt with by way of fixed penalty notices, 21-year-old Ethan Mann was not eligible for that disposal because of a previous notice, adding that another reveller had been fined £1,000 at the same court last week.

Defence solicitor John Murphy revealed the house had been rented “by a crowd of friends” for a 21st birthday party but asked for credit as Mann, from the Bay Road in Larne, had admitted his guilt.

In dealing with the case, Deputy District Judge Chris Holmes said the main considerations in sentencing are punishment and deterrence, adding that because the pandemic and vaccination has moved on since the offence “deterrence not an issue.”

“Just because the Executive put on enormous fines as a potential disposal, that doesn’t mean that they have to automatically be put on,” said the judge adding that Mann “is an idiot…he should’ve known better but I’m not fining him £1,000 for this.”

Imposing a £250 fine, he told Mr Murphy that his client “should consider himself reasonably lucky.”
