Zac Efron: Always open about addiction
Zac Efron made a conscious decision to be open and honest about his addiction problems.
The 27-year-old actor sparked surprise when it was revealed he had been to rehab to seek help for alcohol and substance abuse in 2013. He is now clean and happy to open up about what he went through.
"I didn't want to hide anything and I think it's always good to be very candid and upfront about things," he told British magazine Hello! "I think when you have enjoyed a good relationship with your fans over the years, it's important to respect their trust and be as clear with them as possible. Everyone has been so supportive of me within my family and friends, and many of my fans have come up to me and wished me well. I needed to get my life back to where I wanted it to be - and now I'm in a very good place and things couldn't be better for me, personally and professionally."
In his latest movie We Are Your Friends Zac plays Cole, an aspiring DJ who gets caught up in a hedonistic lifestyle. Many would think this could be a tricky subject matter for the star as it might reopen some wounds, but the Zac didn't see it that way at all.
"No, it was cathartic in a lot of ways and it was interesting to be able to explore a character like that, who's experiencing a lot of things that I could definitely relate to and understand. It's also much better to confront issues from your past than try to run away from them," he explained.
