Will Ferrell jokes: 'I'm a distant dad'

Will Ferrell has joked he is a distant dad who thinks his children should make their own Christmas presents.

The 48-year-old funnyman stars alongside Mark Wahlberg in new comedy Daddy's Home, and as a father-of-three in real life, Will opened up to USA Today about his approach to parenthood.

"I would say my parenting style is distant, at best," he joked. "Keep the kids away, bring them out for birthdays and holidays. Otherwise, I don't got time."

Will has three sons with wife Viveca and the family is gearing up to celebrate Christmas together, but when it comes to gifts, he insists his children aren't spoiled and he has offered some tongue in cheek advice to other parents on how to deal with the holidays.

"It doesn't have to be a big deal," he said. "Don't give them everything on their list. Make them make their own toys. Go out in the garage, give them a bunch of plywood, hammer and nails."

One battle parents always face once December arrives is maintaining the mystique of Santa Claus, and Will has enlisted the help of his eldest son Magnus, 11, to keep the magic alive in the Ferrell household.

"The five-year-old does, for sure," he replied, when asked if the three boys believe in old Saint Nick. "The eight-year-old is teetering on the brink. I've told the 11-year-old. It's a weird tradition, right? To tell the older kids to keep the lie going?"

Will's resume includes hits including Elf, Anchorman and The Other Guys, and he isn't afraid to put himself in embarrassing situations, which means he also isn't scared to inflict the cringe-factor on his offspring.

"Doing all the things you think they would love really embarrasses them," he laughed. "They'll appreciate it later."
