Terrence Howard: I’m still number one on Empire
Empire actor Terrence Howard has joked he’s still “number one” despite co-star Taraji P. Henson being on his “coattails.”
The 46-year-old portrays character Lucious Lyon in the hit Fox drama alongside Oscar nominee Taraji, who plays his ex-wife Cookie Lyon. Their alter egos have matching big personalities and Terrence has joked that in real life the pair also try and win at being top dog.
“Not really, I'm still trying to stay in the game with the Cookie Monster,” he replied when asked by Extra if he has gotten used to the show’s success yet. "When you have Taraji P. Henson on your coattails, I'm like, 'Am I still number one? Is it still my show?’ Yeah, I’m number one. It's still mine."
Joking aside, Terrence was keen to reassure Empire fans there was no fighting going on behind the scenes between him and Taraji despite reports to the contrary.
“(There was) never a feud,” he insisted. “The only feud we have is who's going to get the weekend off, who's going to work the latest on Friday."
Empire received much critical acclaim and was a hit the world over after series one aired in January this year (15). Season two premiered in September and Terrence teased fans about what they can expect from episodes to come.
“Maybe (Lucious) having a bipolar mother had a huge effect on him,” he said. “That is one of the things we're uncovering."
Terrence loves playing the hip hop mogul and former drug dealer on the show but he admitted that when Empire finally does run its course, it could well have sapped all the creative juice out of him.
“I want to give Lucious the rest that I have in this creative space, and then I want to raise my son,” he said, speaking of his five-month-old baby boy Qirin with third wife Mira Pak.
