Taraji P. Henson: I’m a mother first

Taraji P. Henson is determined that her son will grow up respecting women.

The 44-year-old actress is mother to 20-year-old son Marcel, whose father is Taraji’s late high school sweetheart.

And while Taraji has achieved fame in recent years thanks to her role as Cookie in hit US TV show Empire, she is determined not to let her alter ego affect the way her little boy thinks of the opposite sex.

“I’m a mother first,” she told America’s Glamour magazine. “I’m raising my son, and he’s gonna respect women, and that starts with me.”

Taraji is currently single and is concentrating on her professional career. And she admits that even if she does meet someone, she won’t rush into introducing him to Marcel.

“I’m not trying to bring this guy and this guy around,” she said. “[Dating] in the spotlight—I have to consider my son. I don’t want to make it uncomfortable for him when he goes to school with his peers. And I have to answer to my mom too. And my 91-year-old grandmother. I can’t be like, ‘Nothing, Grandma, I didn’t do it; it’s just a [picture of a] girl that looks like me, I promise!’ ”

Taraji’s interview came as she covered the publication for its TV issue, alongside Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez and Scream Queens’ Emma Roberts.

Emma has successfully carved a career for herself away from her famous relatives, namely her aunt Julia Roberts, but says she looks back fondly at how Julia inspired her choice to go into acting.

“My mom and I would stay with my Aunt Julia when I was really young, so I grew up on sets,” Emma said. “I just found this old Polaroid of me on the set of Erin Brockovich, in one of my Aunt Julia’s super-padded dresses from the movie, with the biggest smile on my face. I’d cry when I had to leave. I loved that it felt like camp.”
