Steve Carell: Wooing my wife was nerve-racking
Actor Steve Carell was too shy to ask his wife out on a date when they first met, instead hinting for weeks before sealing the deal.
The 53-year-old star met his spouse Nancy while he was teaching improv classes at Second City Theater in Chicago. The pretty blonde was a student at the facility and worked at a bar nearby, where Steve would flirt with the idea of taking her out but was too nervous to go in for the kill.
"The conversation would go something like, 'Hey, you know, if I were ever to ask a woman out, it would be someone like you. Exactly like you,'" the funnyman told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday (13Oct15). "And she'd say, 'If a guy like you were ever to ask a woman like me out, I would definitely do that.'
"This went on for weeks. Other people at the bar must have been like, 'Just do it! Put us all out of our misery.' And finally, we did. It was great."
All went well and the couple tied the knot in 1995 and have kids Elisabeth, 14, and 11-year-old John together. Nancy often accompanies Steve on the red carpet as he promotes his various projects and they've even worked together before, on the likes of The Daily Show, The Office and The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
It was a daunting task asking her out though, as it brought back memories of chatting up a girl in eighth grade. Steve planned to call the girl up and ask her to the movies, but it backfired and initially knocked his confidence.
"She got on the phone (and I said): ‘Lisa, would you like to go to the movie, a group is going on Friday?’ and she just said: ‘No, I don’t'," he laughed. "No excuse, nothing, just like, ‘I really don’t want to do that.’
"I never asked another girl out on a date. I never had the guts to actually call a girl on the phone after that."
