Sophie Turner: ‘I’m having an identity crisis’
Sophie Turner knows her Game of Thrones character better than she knows herself.
The 20-year-old actress plays Sansa Stark in the popular TV show and has completely immersed herself in the role. Sophie admits that entering her 20s has been a confusing time and she feels more comfortable on the set of the show.
“I feel like I know her better than I know myself,” the star said in an interview with Britain’s Marie Claire magazine. “Which is strange, because I totally don’t know who I am at this point. When I’m on set walking around, I find myself becoming her… I am actually having an identity crisis at the moment.”
Sansa has become a steely character in Game of Thrones after going through more than her fair share of personal turmoil. In season five of the smash hit series, viewers were horrified to see Sansa raped by Ramsay Bolton – played by Iwan Rheon - on their wedding night. Sophie can understand the reaction to the controversial scenes and says the plotline was difficult to shoot.
“It was awkward and there’s no getting around that, whether you’re best mates with the actor or not,” she said.
“It crossed a line of friendship and it felt so disgusting, because I felt I was really letting it happen. I can’t even begin to imagine what it feels like to really be in that situation. I always felt like I was in a secure environment on set, but for those few seconds it was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced. From an actor’s perspective, though, those kinds of scenes are so meaty and really exciting.”
