Sia: I was embarrassed by movie ambitions

Sia was too embarrassed to tell anyone that she wanted to make a movie.

The Chandelier singer is working on a new film project entitled Sister, which she has written and is set to direct. While Sia joins forces with her frequent collaborator Maddie Ziegler on the project, she admits she was terrified about sharing her ambitions initially.

“I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I wanted to make a movie, because I thought it would be seen as a vanity project, because I was a singer,” she said according to Billboard. “And then last year after I made the Chandelier video, I realised that I was pretty good at directing, so I felt a little bit braver."

With no previous experience in the genre, Sia paid someone to help her write the screenplay. When it didn’t turn out quite right, she enlisted the help of friend and children’s book author Dalles Clayton and together they spent three weeks mapping it out.

While the 39-year-old was a novice at penning a screenplay, she did notice some similarities with songwriting.

“For me, the process was basically, I work out the movie. I'll act it out, I'll have the dialogue already in my head," she said. "It's really the formatting. … I can't be bothered to learn Final Draft. I'm not a technical person. Like, when I sing, I just want to sing the melody and write the lyrics. I don't want to have to do production, which is very technical. I don't enjoy that. What I do enjoy is the creative process.”

Once the script was ready, she gave it to family and friends, including actor Joel Edgerton to give her feedback.

“Erik, my husband gave the best notes actually," she laughed.
