Shirley Bassey's sleepy Xmas
Dame Shirley Bassey spent most of Christmas Day asleep.
The 'Goldfinger' singer didn't spend the big day with her children Sharon and Mark because they have big families of their own, but caught up with them earlier in the month and enjoyed a quiet December 25 after a boozy meal with friends.
Speaking before Christmas, she said: "Before Christmas I always take my family out for dinner at the Ritz.
"I have grandsons who have girlfriends so there's no room at the inn for me and I'm not sleeping on the sofa.
"I'm having Christmas lunch with my friends at the Hermitage in Monte Carlo and we'll drink a lot of pink champagne.
"Then I go off to bed for the rest of the day, which is wonderful. I have very quiet Christmases now for my age."
The 78-year-old singer has teamed up with classical crossover group Blake to release 'The Christmas Song' and admits the record is a long-held ambition for her.
She said: "It's a first for me after 60-odd years in the business
"I have to thank these boys because without them I would never have done a Christmas carol.
"My record company would turn a deaf ear whenever I mentioned it. They couldn't imagine me singing 'Silent Night'."
