Ryan Gosling: 'Shrink prescribed comedy'
Ryan Gosling’s shrink told him to do comedy.
The handsome actor may be well known for his good looks and toned torso, but Ryan is also regarded as one of Hollywood’s best performers. He was nominated for an Oscar in 2007 for Half Nelson, and went on to star in a string of serious roles.
The Canadian star has also turned his hand to comedy in recent years, with latest offering The Nice Guys his funniest flick to date. Many people believe laughter is the best medicine, and Ryan couldn’t agree more.
“What’s nice with comedy is that you know it’s working if it’s funny,” he told Britain’s ES magazine. “With drama you can watch people in the wings (of a theatre) and you don’t know if they are suffering (with you) through your movie or they are just deeply bored.
"A long time ago I went to see a shrink and he wrote me a prescription that said: ‘Do comedy’.”
The advice didn’t fall on deaf ears, and Ryan is now carving out a comedy career alongside his dramatic projects.
Recalling how he first got into entertainment, the 35-year-old admits it was after one of his uncles became an Elvis impersonator that he decided show business was for him. He started as part of the Mickey Mouse Club and hasn’t looked back since.
Becoming an international heartthrob isn’t always easy to deal with, but Ryan, who recently welcomed daughter number two with partner Eva Mendes, takes it with a pinch of salt.
“It’s our time as men to be on the receiving end of the stick,” he explained. “I grew up with women so I’ve always been aware of it. When my mother and I walked to the grocery store, men would circle the block in cars. It was very, very scary, especially as a young boy. Very predatory - a hunt.”
