Robert Pattinson: Fame drove me crazy

Robert Pattinson didn't shop in a supermarket for six years due to his Twilight fame, but now doesn't worry about people selling him out.

The British actor remains best known for his portrayal of vampire Edward Cullen in the movie franchise, even though the final one hit screens in 2012. The success of the films, coupled with his real-life romance with his co-star Kristen Stewart, saw him become the subject of intense scrutiny. It was hard for him to handle and the 29-year-old star is glad things have changed.

"I had people sitting outside my house every single day, and it drove me crazy," he told NME magazine.

"I didn't go into a supermarket for about six years. But now I can go in and chat to the guy who's working there about his kids, or where he's going on holiday, and not be thinking, 'Is he gonna sell me out?' I just don't have to think about that stuff anymore."

Things began to change for Robert after he split from Kristen. In the summer of 2012 photos of the actress canoodling with married film director Rupert Sanders were published, and although she publicly apologised they spelt the end for her romance with Robert.

He took a break from public life and is now enjoying a much more low-key relationship with singer FKA twigs, who he's engaged to. These days the actor jokes that the only embarrassing photo which could be caught of him would be perusing the aisles in a book shop.

In fact, his life has changed so much the star can't believe some of the things he used to do.

"I was watching the MTV VMAs the other day and thinking how bizarre it was that I ever did that s**t," he laughed.

"I remember doing those awards and saying the dumbest stuff. And I was hungover for most of it."

Although he's in a better head space these days, Robert isn't immune to googling himself. He tries not to as he knows nothing good comes from it, but he finds it strangely addictive.

"I go through periods where I don't do it at all and feel glorious! Then I'll fall back into this pit," he explained.
