Ricky Gervais returning as Golden Globes host

Comedian and actor Ricky Gervais has been announced as the host of the 2016 Golden Globe Awards.

The British star previously hosted the ceremony from 2010-2012 before being replaced by former Saturday Night Live alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. While the women held the mantle for the next two years, it was revealed on Monday (26Oct15) that Ricky would be returning once again.

“Tina and Amy are a hard act to follow but Ricky is completely fearless and entirely up for the job,” NBC’s president of alternative and late-night Paul Telegdy said, according to Deadline. “He always did us proud. Welcome back, Ricky.”

Ricky, 54, caused shock among the Hollywood A-list with his pointed barbs during his first stint as presenter. But his comments hit headlines and drew big audiences for the network, and the star previously admitted that he liked being the man in the hot seat.

“I enjoyed the last three Golden Globes immensely,” he said while promoting his TV show Derek in 2013. “To be the most feared man in Hollywood for three hours was such fun… That’s such a tiny part of my life. I literally treat it like three hours work. Do you know what I mean?”

Ricky had previously insisted he would never return to his role as Globes host. But it seems the show executives have been able to persuade him otherwise.

“Ricky Gervais left us with a lasting impression and we are thrilled to have him back in our show as we honour the best in film and television,” HFPA president Lorenzo Soria told Deadline. “His off-the-cuff wit and quirky charm will surely have the room and audiences around the world at the edge of their seats.”

Ricky has yet to comment on the announcement but he did retweet a picture posted by the Golden Globes that showed a cartoon silhouette of him with the words “He’s back!” across the front.
