Ricky Gervais: 'My Golden Globes jokes might offend everyone on Earth'

When it comes to his forthcoming hosting duties for the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais is unsure whether his quips will entertain people or infuriate them.

The 54-year-old British comedian will host the 73rd Golden Globe Awards on 10 January 2016, his fourth time presenting the ceremony, having taken on the job in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

But even though he is a seasoned veteran when it comes to serving as master of ceremonies at the event, Ricky still has reservations about how his jokes will land on the audience, telling People of his writing process in an exclusive video clip: "This could offend everyone in the world. Or they might like it. But it's the not knowing that's exciting."

Ricky has been active in the entertainment industry since the early 1980s and over the years he's learned people-pleasing is the worst thing he can do as a comedian.

Instead, The Office star relies on his own instinct when it comes to choosing the best jokes.

"I think if you make it fun for yourself, I think that filters through without being ridiculously self-indulgent," he noted. "I think if you do things that excite you – that you think is original... Sometimes when I write a joke I get an adrenaline rush. I'm excited about how good I think it is. But it's that unknown. It could go the wrong way."

Nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards will be officially announced on Thursday 10 December (15).
