Ricky Gervais: 'I need to drink to be brave at Golden Globes'
Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais has no plans to stay sober during the ceremony on Sunday night (10Jan16), as he'll need a little booze to get through the show.
The British actor and comedian is returning to present the annual awards show for the fourth time, and while he has three previous ceremonies under his belt, he admits he still needs a little alcoholic help to psych himself up to face the world's biggest movie and TV stars and poke fun at them.
"If I didn’t drink I wouldn’t be brave enough to say some of the things I’m going to say,” he confessed to U.S. talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, a past Oscars host. "I start (drinking) at a reasonable hour - ya know, I’m not a maniac. Three or four (pm) or something like that."
The 54-year-old was confirmed as Globes host in October (15), agreeing to take back the reins of the show from Saturday Night Live stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who fronted the show from 2013 to 2015.
Ricky had previously said he would never be the master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes again, but told Ellen why he had a change of heart.
"They said I could say what I want again," he said.
During past Globes, Ricky has taken shots at actress Jodie Foster's sexuality, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, and Madonna's love life, and he has already let it be known he plans to offend someone this year too.
"Because I can see the future, I'd like to apologise now for the things I said at next week's Golden Globes," he wrote on Twitter on 1 January. "I was drunk & didn't give a f**k.”
Meanwhile, It was announced on Tuesday (05Jan16) that Jim Carrey will make his first public appearance since the death of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White in September (15) when he presents at the Golden Globes. Mel Gibson, who has often been the butt of Ricky's jokes, will also appear.
