Rachel Bilson: Childhood hunger should not exist
Actress Rachel Bilson is discouraged by rampant childhood hunger, as she thinks it is “just not okay” to stand by and watch a kid starve.
The 34-year-old Hart of Dixie star and her fiancé Hayden Christensen welcomed daughter Briar Rose on 29 October 2014.
Ahead of the baby’s first birthday, Rachel and her peer Kristen Bell were honoured as charity organisation Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Champions at the annual No Kid Hungry Dinner, which took place in Beverly Hills Wednesday 14 October (15) at The Four Seasons Hotel.
And while speaking to the crowd from a podium, Rachel emphasised how important the issue of child hunger is to her.
“I’m a new mum-ish. She’s almost one… but you kind of feel like a mum to all kids,” she explained, according to Variety. “Finding out that so many children are hungry is just not okay.
“For children to have a full tummy, they are able to learn and dream big and so many important things and shape our country… I’m so happy to be a part of this.”
Rachel’s participation with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign is motivated mainly by education.
She imagines studying on an empty stomach would be the worst thing for anyone attempting to expand their knowledge.
“It's a little thing that can go over your head, but it's so important,” Rachel told E! News. “Kids who are going to school hungry, they're not absorbing information as well, and their education isn't benefitting as much as it could...They're trying to help kids, and having these programmes where they eat, they can achieve their goals even better because they're well fed and because they can focus."
Fortunately Rachel’s own little tyke Briar Rose is developing very well.
In fact the little girl is growing so fast her mother is trying to keep up.
“She's doing good!” Rachel gushed to Us Weekly magazine. “She's a smart little girl—very active.”
