Oyelowo: I fantasise about Elba being Bond
David Oyelowo fantasizes about Idris Elba playing James Bond.
Both actors have been linked to the role, which is currently portrayed by Daniel Craig. While David has recorded the voice of the secret agent for the in the audio book of the latest novel, Trigger Mortis, he doesn’t visualise himself in the role on the big screen.
“I don’t fantasise about playing Bond, but I fantasise about a world in which someone like me or like Idris Elba has the opportunity to play that kind of role,” he told the New York Daily News. “I think that the great thing about all of this conversation is that it’s very clear that the audience is speaking to our industry and those with greenlight ability and content creators and writers and producers that they want to see someone like Idris Elba, who is a perfect leading man, as a lead.”
In fact the star, who was snubbed at this year’s Oscars for his role in Martin Luther King Jr. movie Selma, thinks the conversation about a black actor playing Bond is just the start.
“I personally think that the conversation should move away from Bond itself,” he continued, “and to the sheer amount of white actors who get opportunities time and again, both in failure and success.”
Idris has also spoken about the speculation that he will be the first black actor to play 007. The 43-year-old thinks the hype will have the reverse effect with Bond bosses.
"If I were the Bond producers and everyone was pointing me towards one actor, what's the surprise in that?” he said to Maxim. “Honestly, it's one of those things that if it should happen, it would be a self-fulfilling prophecy it would be the will of a nation," he smiled.
