Olivia Wilde and Ray Romano respond after Vinyl is axed

Olivia Wilde and Ray Romano have responded to the news that their HBO series Vinyl has been axed.

The rock 'n' roll drama, which centred around a record label in 1970s New York, initially received positive feedback when it premiered in February (16) but after falling ratings, executives announced on Wednesday (22Jun16) that they had made the decision not to proceed with a second season.

Shortly after the news was confirmed, Olivia, who played actress and model Devon Finestra in the series, took to Twitter to thank fans for their support.

"Thanks for all the kind words about Vinyl, my friends," she wrote. "We had a BLAST, and made something special. Party on."

Former Everybody Loves Raymond comedian Ray, meanwhile, was slightly more revealing with his comments about the cancellation, admitting it felt like a "knife in the guts".

"I was so happy to have a role like that, to be able to go to those places; I’ve never had an opportunity before like that," he told News Corp Australia.

"It’s not that I wasn’t looking before that, it’s that nobody would really consider me. Thankfully Martin Scorsese had never heard of me before - he really had never heard of me. So he was looking at me fresh and he thought I was right for the role. It’s a big hurdle to move away, to have people think of you in a different way than the character you were playing for 10 years.

"So it was great that I at least got to do it. I got to work with some great people and do some good stuff. Hopefully someone was watching!"

Ray played record executive Zak Yankovich in the show, which also starred Bobby Cannavale and Jack Quaid among others.

Announcing the cancellation on Wednesday, HBO bosses said in a statement: "After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of Vinyl.

"Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project."
