Nick Jonas opens up about cancelled North Carolina gigs
Nick Jonas decision to cancel tour stops in North Carolina in protest of the state's controversial anti-LGBT law was the "right thing to do".
Nick and long-time friend Demi Lovato had been billed to perform in the U.S. cities of Charlotte and Raleigh on 30 June and 2 July (16), respectively, as part of their Future Now trek.
However, they announced last month (Apr16) that they would be joining musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam in cancelling planned concerts to protest against the state's law (called HB2, or House Bill 2) which prevents transgender men and women from using bathrooms aligned with their gender identity.
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday (09May16), Nick explained how he and Demi came to the decision, which he admits was the result of “a lot of conversations” between the two artists and their respective teams.
"It’s an incredibly frustrating situation overall. We are very aware of our strong LGBT community fan base and the support they’ve given us and the support we want to give them," he explained. "And this was a time where I feel like we said we have to make a bold statement, put our foot down and stand firm in something we believe in and it’s unfortunate for the fans there and for us because we want to go play as many shows as possible. But in our minds it’s the right thing to do and hopefully our fans will stand united with us."
On a different note, host Ellen also attempted to get Nick to set the record straight about his dating life. While Nick, 23, and actress Kate Hudson, 37, have been spotted out and about several times over the past year, the former Jonas Brothers member stated to Ellen that he is currently single.
But Ellen continued to push the star, by jokingly asking, "So how's Kate Hudson doing? She's good?"
"She's great," Nick responded, holding back an ear-to-ear grin and a chuckle. "We had a group dinner the night before the Met Gala. Lots of people and she was there and I was there."
Ellen, however, didn't really believe him. "Uh-huh," she said, adding, "Whatever."
Nick and Demi's Future Now Tour kicks off on 24 June (16) in Sunrise, Florida.
