Nick Jonas embraced vulnerability on new album

Pop star Nick Jonas embraced his vulnerable side on his upcoming album Last Year Was Complicated.

The 23-year-old split from his girlfriend of two years, Olivia Culpo, last year (15), and the album's title suggests the songs are mostly about the break-up.

Nick hasn't been afraid of baring his soul for the record, and explained to People Magazine how his inner feelings inspired him to write his most personal lyrics.

"It's always difficult to open yourself up that way, but it's important to get vulnerable," he said. "Right now, at this moment, Beyonce and Drake and all these artists are really embracing vulnerability; it makes a huge difference. I'm working my hardest to lay out my stories and my music and connect with my fans - and my own self - in that way."

Nick and former Miss USA Olivia, 23, called time on the relationship in June, blaming their hectic work schedules, and Nick hinted then that his future work could be influenced by their split.

"It's very tough and we had a beautiful two years together and (I have) nothing but love and respect for her," he told E! News. "But it's always hard and my thing now is focusing on my work and staying as busy as I can, as creative as I can be. These are the times you’ve just got to dive in and get lost in your work and that's what I'm trying to do,"

Nick will release Last Year Was Complicated a week before he kicks off his joint Future Now tour with close friend, Demi Lovato, and he told People he is pumped up about the gigs.

"I think that the thing that makes touring with Demi so exciting is we're friends, obviously, but also our partnership with the record label we started and the ability to build a night of music and have it not feel like a festival lineup but a full show, with intertwined sets (makes it all work)," he said. "That'll keep it interesting for us and the fans."

The singers launched their record label, Safe House Records, in May last year (15).
