Michael Caine: I've mentally retired
Legendary actor Michael Caine has retired in his head, but he can't stop accepting good scripts.
The 82-year-old double Oscar winner has appeared in an array of classic movies including Zulu, Alfie and The Dark Knight Rises during his illustrious career and he will next be seen in comedy-drama Youth, alongside fellow veterans Jane Fonda and Harvey Keitel. While he was ready for a break from making movies, he couldn't turn down the opportunity to work with both co-stars.
"I’ve mentally retired, but I keep getting these scripts that I can’t refuse,” he told Variety at the film's Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday (17Nov15).
“Now, I don’t have a job. I don’t have a script or anything and it would take something incredible to get me out of bed in the morning.”
The film details the eternal struggle between youth and age and the themes of life and death. Harvey, 76, has also had a successful movie career spanning more than 40 years and for him, the movie highlights how older people can still keep themselves young with a curious mind.
“(I) don’t have a lazy mind,” he added. “The mind doesn’t grow old, the mind wants to know and seek more.”
Jane agreed with her co-star's sentiment. The 77-year-old looks years younger than her age and she puts it down to having the right attitude.
“By my 20’s and 30’s I was really old; I’m so young now spiritually in my soul,” she said. “I’ve managed to fight cynicism and stay open and curious so now I feel kind of like a novice.”
The actress can give her male co-stars a run for their money in terms of success, having won two Academy Awards during her 50-year career, but she recently admitted that, like Michael, she is still shocked to be acting in her late-70s.
“I’m surprised I’m still getting opportunities because, for women, once you reach 40 or 50, it’s very difficult to find work,” she told Britain's Daily Mirror.
