Melissa McCarthy 'thrilled' for Gilmore Girls revival
Melissa McCarthy is "thrilled" that that hit series television Gilmore Girls is being revived.
Melissa played Sookie St. James on the popular comedy-drama series, which ran for seven seasons until from 2000 until 2007. In January (16), it was confirmed that production was beginning on four new 90-minute episodes about the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore (played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel respectively), which will air on streaming service Netflix.
Though the 45-year-old has confirmed she will not be appearing in new series due to her work commitments, she fully supports the revival and plans to watch it.
"I'm actually thrilled that it's happening," she told E! News on Wednesday (16Mar16). "I loved that show, and I think the fans for that show are super loyal and great and I will watch every single one of them."
Melissa, who has been carving a name for herself in Hollywood hits such as Bridesmaids and The Heat, added that she would be open to appearing as her chef character Sookie in the future should the renewal continue for another season.
"I want to cook again. I want to put salt and then stir," she joked. "That was seven years of my life and it was really great. I was proud of that show."
After Netflix announced it was reviving Gilmore Girls, fans quickly began speculating about which members of the original cast would be returning. While Melissa admits she wasn’t asked to return, she said she wished the cast "all the best!"
“I didn’t actually get asked to do it,” she explained of her absence. “I think they thought I was busy, and by the time it did come up, then I actually was.”
Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who is returning for the revival, had told TVLine previously that they planned the storylines without Sookie because of Melissa's hectic schedule, but told her team that if she was available even for an afternoon, they would write her in.
Melissa is one of the only cast members from the original show to not return for the continuation.
Stars Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Matt Czuchry, Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki, Sean Gunn, and Keiko Agena, among others, are all set to star in the Netflix revival.
A release date for the new series has not yet been set.
