Mel Gibson: 'I've been sober for a decade'
Mel Gibson is a changed man after maintaining his sobriety for the past 10 years.
The 60-year-old actor hit headlines in 2006 when he was filmed making anti-Semitic remarks while being arrested in Malibu, California for drink driving.
That incident led to him turning to Alcoholics Anonymous for help, and he's been on the straight and narrow since then, Mel insisted in an interview with Australian television programme Sunday Night.
"I am a member of (the) 12-step program and I achieved sobriety like that. I've got 10 years of sobriety under my belt," he said.
Mel found his career dramatically affected when the video of his 2006 arrest went public. However, he said he was determined not to feel sorry for himself, and used the scandal as the motivation to turn his life around.
"Imagine the worst moment you ever had recorded and broadcast to the world... that's what happened," he said. “And it wasn’t meant to be public. You didn’t stand on a soap box and do it. But that’s what happens, you know? So, (it’s) all in the past.
“I’m still alive, I’m still breathing. Feeling sorry for ourselves or having a pity party about the past or what’s happened it’s just not worth it, ‘cause it affects the present and it affects the future."
The controversy surrounding Mel didn't stop there though, as in 2010 his ex Oksana Grigorieva accused him of physically abusing her. She also released a rant she had secretly recorded, in which Mel made several racial slurs.
Mel insists none of his actions have been fuelled by alcohol as he has been sober for a decade. And he finds any allegations to the contrary "disappointing".
"It is disheartening when you've been 10 years dry, on the wagon... sober, and you have to read every year or so that you're loaded," he said. ("It's) disappointing because it's like a public notice that you're loaded, but you're not. It's a disingenuous reportage."
Mel is expecting his ninth child with 26-year-old girlfriend Rosalind Ross.
