Matthew McConaughey's son ruled out going out to war after witnessing battle scenes on his father's new movie Free State of Jones.

Matthew stars in the film as real-life farmer Newton Knight, who led a group of farmers and slaves in a rebellion against the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the epic drama required a number of battle sequences.

The actor brought his seven-year-old son Levi, who he has with while Camila Alves, to set often and while the youngster enjoyed checking out the machinery and props, he learned that he wouldn't like to be involved in a war himself when he saw dummies of fallen men in a combat scene.

"They had made a bunch of dummies that looked very, very real," Matthew told ETOnline. "I stood beside him (Levi) and for about a minute he just stared (at them)... He goes, 'Papai, I don't want to go to war.' I was like, ‘Yeah I hear you.’"

Levi was also allowed to get hands-on with the equipment and the crew let him think he was responsible for the onset explosions.

"He was there a lot," the star said. "He got to press the buttons to explode a lot of the things, or at least he thought it was him doing it."

Matthew, 46, appeared on U.S. news program Today on Wednesday (15Jun16) and revealed he had never heard of Newton Knight before, but was glad he could be a part of telling an lesser known piece of American history.

He also remarked on the film's challenging scenes, including a journey through a swamp, explaining, "It was tough times, but in the right way. Yes, we were neck deep in the swamps in south Louisiana. The great thing about that is that it becomes an adventure for the entire crew, it becomes an adventure for all the actors."

Free State of Jones, which also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is released in U.S. cinemas on 24 June (16) and in the U.K. on 9 September (16).

Matthew is also dad to six-year-old Vida and three-year-old Livingston with Camila.
