Mary Berry keeps slim

Mary Berry stays slim because "people don't want to see a large person judging cakes".

The 'Great British Bake Off' star insists she only ever has one slice of cake because she doesn't want people to judge her on her body shape.

She said: "I'll never think sugar is evil. I often have a piece of shortbread with coffee after dinner, and when I make a cake at the weekend, I'll eat one small slice but never two. It's better to enjoy everything in moderation.

"I eat carefully because people don't want to see a large person judging cakes. They'll think to themselves, 'That's what happens if you eat cake.' I actually think eating cake is good for us. I'm sad about Britain's obesity problems, but it's a matter of eating the right foods and not too much."

The 80-year-old television personality also admits she is the BBC One show's "resident schoolmistress" and regularly has to tell fellow judge Paul Hollywood and hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc to "behave".

She told the Sunday Times' Dish magazine: "I'm the 'Great British Bake Off's resident schoolmistress. The other presenters enjoy making innuendos and can sometimes be rather naughty. It's always me who says, 'Come on, behave yourself,' although sometimes I secretly find it quite funny, too.

"I think people love the programme because we're all just being ourselves; Mel and Sue are very good at giving the bakers confidence, and Paul is brilliant with bread."
