Lupita Nyong'o was stood up by her prom date
Lupita Nyong'o revealed she was stood up by her high school prom date.
The Oscar-winning actress recalled the upsetting story during an appearance on U.S. chat show Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday night (14Mar16).
Lupita, who grew up in Kenya, said she "gathered up the guts" to ask a guy in her neighbourhood who she thought was "so cute" to the dance.
"I didn't talk to him much at all, but I asked him to prom," she laughed.
“I asked him to go and he was like sure sure sure. I told him what the colour scheme was, because I was designing my own dress and everything.”
The 33-year-old, who looked stunning in a red satin trouser suit and matching crop top, then revealed that sadly her date did not show up to the party and she was left to dance alone.
"I think it scared him because I was going to wear red and yellow, and maybe he didn't have a red suit," she joked, adding, "And I was on the committee to make it happen and everything like that."
Seth comforted Lupita playfully by saying, “Well hopefully he regretted it but I do think there is a lesson out there for young girls and that’s not red and yellow.”
Getting dates is not a problem for the beautiful star these days - she's fluent in four languages, graduated with a master's degree in drama from Yale School of Drama and is a cover girl for Lancome.
Lupita is also currently starring in the Broadway show Eclipsed in New York, which tells the tale of five women brought together by upheaval in their homeland of Liberia.
Her Broadway debut comes after a busy schedule completing recent film projects. Lupita starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that was released in December, as the motion capture character Maz Kanata.
She also just wrapped production in Uganda on Mira Nair’s The Queen of Katwe opposite David Oyelowo, and lends her voice to Jon Favreau’s upcoming Jungle Book as Raksha, set for release in April.
