Leonardo DiCaprio admits to being surprised by the reaction to his performances

Leonardo DiCaprio is surprised some of his on-screen performances haven't received more acclaim.

The 41-year-old star - who has been nominated four times for the Best Actor award at the Oscars - has admitted to feeling some of his performances and movies have deserved more credit than they've been given.

Reflecting on his chances of winning an Academy Award for his starring role in 'The Revenant', DiCaprio said: "The truth of the matter is that I've been in situations before where I've thought films or performances, either mine or others, should be either nominated more adored by the public, or critics should revere it more. But it's beyond your control."

DiCaprio stars as a fur trapper in the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed movie, which he says marks a move away from the typical Hollywood film.

He told 'The Andrew Marr Show': "You just do your best work. Knowing that I did a movie that took this much of my life, that we devoted this much to as far as focus is concerned, we gave it everything we possibly could.

"To sit here looking at receiving that many nominations for this film, it not only feels good but it also feels like people have a yearning to see a different type of film."
