Lake Bell: 'I played it safe with dating'
Actress Lake Bell never had a "crazy" dating life before getting married and didn't even think she'd tie the knot.
In one of her recent films, Man Up, Lake plays a woman called Nancy who goes on a blind date with the wrong man (Simon Pegg). It wasn't an easy role to relate to though as Lake didn't share many of her alter ego's outlooks.
"It’s funny, because I didn’t have too wild and crazy of a dating landscape," she explained to uproxx.com. "I had a couple crazy moments. But, naturally, I’m kind of an optimist; Nancy’s cynicism is something that I had to excavate from friends of mine, who make me laugh with their incredible sort of jaded (point of view).
"All I can say that I relate to initially is that, before I met my husband, I was staunchly opposed to the concept of marriage. I thought it was archaic and overly romanticised... But I will admit that every unromantic, I think, at their core is desperately hoping to be proved wrong."
The American star said 'I do' with husband Scott Campbell in 2013 and gave birth to their daughter Nova in late 2014. She found herself "floored" by her now spouse when she first met him, and didn't hesitate when he popped the question. He's always supporting her career and Lake is keen to voice her opinions on the lack of female directors in Hollywood. She's helmed several movies herself and is pleased other famous ladies are taking note, like Pitch Perfect 2 director and cast member Elizabeth Banks.
"The best part of this wave of conversation and discussion about female filmmakers and female presence in Hollywood is the fact that it’s trendy," she noted. "What a great trend, you know? It’s part of the consciousness, and finally, alas, it’s being investigated in a way that’s not ignorable. There’s no way to gloss over it."
