Kiefer Sutherland praises Julia Roberts for ending engagement

Kiefer Sutherland has no hard feelings towards ex-fiance Julia Roberts, insisting it took courage for her to walk away from the relationship on the eve of their wedding.

Kiefer is convinced Julia did the right thing when she put her rising career first and decided she didn't want to become Mrs. Sutherland three days before the young Hollywood pair was set to exchange vows.

The couple began dating and became engaged in 1990 after meeting on the set of Flatliners, and they planned to wed the following year.

"I think she was being realistic for herself and I think that's much better," he tells People magazine. "I think it's hard to explain the pressure. We were young and we were both very much in love and we had decided that we wanted to get married."

"She was arguably the most famous woman in the world and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us became something so big," he continues. "It wasn't what she wanted to do in the end and I think it took a lot of courage, in amongst all that other stuff, to be able to say, 'I can't do this'. And I'm gonna leave it at that."

The Pretty Woman star subsequently married country singer Lyle Lovett in 1993, but they parted ways in 1995. She went on to tie the knot with cameraman Danny Moder in 2002, while Kiefer wed Elizabeth Winn in 1996 and they separated in 1999. He filed for divorce in 2004 and the union was finalised in 2008. He also reportedly dated actress Bo Derek in 2000.
