Kevin Spacey: 'House of Cards can predict the future!'

Kevin Spacey's show House of Cards keeps predicting the future.

The 56-year-old actor stars as Francis Underwood in the hit U.S. television show. The political drama is currently airing its fourth season and features a "contested convention" - when no one candidate gets the majority of votes from delegates - as one of its story lines.

American politics is currently in the headlines thanks to the race for the presidency, and a contested convention is looking likely at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July (16).

This isn't the first time House of Cards has mirrored real life, as it has had predictive plot lines every season.

"By the way, this has happened every season," Kevin explained on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night. "We have the writers, we have discussed the story lines, where we want to go, the arc of the show, we write it, we film it and then just before it airs, something that we have done happens in real life. In every season this has happened.

"And we think people are going to assume we ripped it from the headlines, right? But in fact it’s been the other way around."

Now Kevin is hoping to take things to the next level. He is planning to include a plot line in an upcoming season to make something "really awesome" happen in real life.

"So we’ve decided that the thing that we should do is write something into the show that will be really awesome to have happen, like $965 billion gets put into The National Endowment for the Arts," Kevin laughed. "And then lets see if we can make it happen! It’s an awesome idea."

The National Endowment for the Arts is a United States government agency that funds projects "exhibiting artistic excellence".
