Kelis left devastated when chef dreams went up in smoke
Kelis was left heartbroken when she realised she couldn’t support her family working as a chef.
The 36-year-old star made a name for herself as a singer, but soon discovered she’d much rather work in the culinary world than the music industry. After splitting up with husband Nas, just before their son Knight was born in 2009, Kelis understood she needed to carry on singing in order to provide for the tot, effectively putting her own dreams on the backburner.
“Everything turned upside down and I didn’t know how to support myself through food yet, so I had to go back to what I knew, which was music,” she sighed to Britain’s The Guardian newspaper. “And it was kind of heartbreaking – I couldn’t even bear to watch any cooking shows.”
Fast forward seven years and it’s a different story for Kelis, who is just days away from opening the doors to her London pop-up restaurant. As well as bringing out a line of condiments and graduating from culinary school, the Milkshake singer has now joined forces with Andy Taylor, one half of chef duo Le Bun, to devise a new menu for diners in the British capital.
“It is totally different,” she said of her two careers. “I really do feel that music is a very selfish thing. I’ve always made music very specifically for myself. The fact that it has been a success for me is really God-given because I could not care less what people like.”
“There’s also something aggressive about music – it attacks your ears even when you don’t want to listen – whereas food is the total opposite. Food is a choice and I think because of that, there’s a certain level of respect that has to go into it.”
Kelis x Le Bun is located at Leicester House from 6 to 17 July (16) before moving to Standon Calling, Hertfordshire from 29 to 31 July.
