Kate Beckinsale wants a 'sensible' career for daughter
Kate Beckinsale thinks her daughter will follow her famous parents into showbusiness.
Underworld star Kate shares Lily, 17, with ex-partner and actor Michael Sheen, and reveals the teenager is keen to pursue a career as an actress.
"We were hoping to produce something sensible like a doctor but unfortunately she does want to be an actor," Kate told Britain's Hello! magazine, jokingly adding, "So we've just had to accept our failure there."
The 42-year-old star describes Lily as a bright, intelligent and feisty teenager, and admits parenting a teenager opens up a raft of new challenges which are sometimes harder than looking after an infant.
"I wouldn't have said that at the time because you think that every stage you're in is the hardest one. But I do think that little kids have little problems and bigger kids have bigger problems," shared Kate.
With regard to her career, the brunette beauty is in a very happy place and is pleased with the quality of projects she is taking on. Kate plays Lady Susan Vernon in Whit Stillman's upcoming romantic comedy Love and Friendship, based on Jane Austen's short novel Lady Susan. In the film, Lady Vernon seeks refuge at her in-laws estate while rumours about her private life circulate through society. Speaking about the role, Kate says she "loved" portraying the character and was attracted to Lady Susan’s sense of humour.
"She's a very bright woman and if you transported her to 2016 she would have a very high-powered job," she explained. "But in those days, in order to secure a future you had to find a man with money. While researching the movie, I felt very lucky that I was born when I was and be able to go to school and all that."
Love and Friendship, which also stars Chloe Sevigny and Stephen Fry, is set to hit U.S. theatres on May 13 (16) and 27 May in the U.K.
