Julianne Hough: 'I don't have to be the man in my relationship'

Dancer and actress Julianne Hough is glad she doesn't have to take the lead in her relationship with fiance Brooks Laich.

The 27-year-old became engaged to the ice hockey player in August (15), and opened up about the dynamics of their relationship in the latest issue of Redbook magazine.

"Because of the nature of my career, it's very easy for me to call the shots and 'be the man'," she explained, "so it's very nice to feel like a strong woman and still have my man be my leading man."

The couple first went public with its relationship in February, 2014 and Brooks, 32, decided to pop the question when Julianne least expected it.

"We were at home, romantic and relaxed, which is perfectly very 'us',” Julianne wrote on her blog soon after the proposal. “We stood on the deck, watching the sun set over the lake and listening to our favorite songs. Not even for a second did I expect that beautiful, serene scene was about to become one of the most meaningful moments of our lives.

“In fact, I was so taken aback when Brooks got down on one knee I completely blacked out! It was like a rush of heat and a wave of uncontrollable emotion swept right through my body.”

But even though the star is riding high in both her personal and professional life, having recently starred in Grease: Live and the movie Dirty Grandpa, she admitted to Redbook she still has her down days like anybody else.

"Trust me, I have my days when I just break down and cry," she added. "I don't even know why I'm crying. (But) if you never feel sad about anything, there's nothing dynamic to life, and that's boring."
