Joshua Jackson making off Broadway debut
Actor Joshua Jackson will make his off Broadway debut in a production of Smart People.
The former Dawson’s Creek star has focused his career to date on television, starring in Fringe and Showtime’s The Affair, but Variety reports the 37 year old is set to tread the boards off Broadway for the first time in the Second Stage Theater production of Lydia R. Diamond’s Smart People.
The play focuses on the tangled relationships between four Harvard intellectuals on the eve of Barack Obama’s first presidential election victory.
Joshua will star alongside House of Cards actor Mahershala Ali, Anne Son and Tessa Thompson in the production directed by Kenny Leon, who won a Tony Award for his staging of 2014’s A Raisin in the Sun.
While Joshua has appeared in London’s West End in a production of David Mamet’s A Life in the Theater, he has yet to feature on Broadway.
The actor has been embracing lots of new challenges in his career this year, having starred alongside long-term partner Diane Kruger in the movie Sky earlier this year (15).
But Diane recently admitted she was terrified about working with Joshua because she felt their real-life relationship might influence their roles on the silver screen.
“He’s an actor, and we were looking for actors for free,” Diane told ET Online, “so I was like, ‘Hey, want to be the policeman?’ I was worried about having chemistry with him, because we’re not supposed to have chemistry.
“But when he stepped out of the trailer, I knew we were OK. He’d been growing this beard for about three months and then shaved it off for the moustache. I told him he had to shave it off before he came home!”
Smart People will open at Second Stage Theater’s Off Broadway space for previews on 26 January ahead of a 11 February opening.
