Jane Fonda auctioning off wedding dress from Ted Turner marriage
Jane Fonda is giving fans the chance to bid on the dress she wore when she wed media mogul Ted Turner.
The movie veteran is selling off a collection of personal items, including the Tiffany engagement ring her ex-husband gave her and some of the workout leotards she wore in her famous fitness videos, at an auction in Los Angeles next month (Sep16).
But it's her 1991 wedding outfit that's sure to create the most buzz.
Joking that she "wasn't going to go out and buy some expensive dress for a third marriage", the actress reveals she opted to wear the Victorian-inspired gown that featured in 1981 film Rollover.
"It's an antique dress that the costume designer for the movie (found for me)...," Jane tells People. "She did the costumes and I have several other pieces from that movie for auction. It was a scene when I was going to Saudi Arabia, where a woman has to be totally covered, so we decided to get an antique American dress - high collar, high neck, floor length. And then she made a white cape that went over it. And I kept it!"
The actress felt the movie outfit would be perfect for the wedding ceremony, which took place at one of Turner's plantation homes in Florida, adding, "It's kind of an old-fashioned setting, and I thought, 'Well, this dress would suit the venue'. So I pulled it out of my closet and got Ted a white linen suit."
The dress is expected to fetch between $2,000 and $4,000 (GBP1,530 and GBP3,000).
The engagement ring Turner gave his bride-to-be is also set to set off a bidding frenzy at the auction - the 18-carat yellow gold piece features two round diamonds.
Barbarella star Fonda's marriage to Turner lasted 10 years. The couple divorced in 2001. The actress, who was previously married to French director Roger Vadim and activist Tom Hayden, is currently dating record producer Richard Perry.
Julien's Auctions will host the auction on 23 September (16).
