Idris Elba: Be Legit!
Idris Elba can tell when someone isn’t being legit.
The British actor is the first male to ever feature on the cover of Maxim magazine. He will be the face of their September ‘Legit Issue’ and in a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot he shared what he thinks the term means.
“If you’re not being legit at a moment when someone asks you something, it’s not a bad thing, but you can tell the difference with someone who knows what they’re talking about, are confident about it and mean what they say to you, that’s legit, that’s not fake,” he explained. “A lot of people come up to you and say ‘I love your work, I love your work’ and half of them are not legit. They’ve never seen my work, they’re just enamoured by meeting a personality. I’ve had a lot of experience where I’ve met people who aren’t 100 per cent legit.”
How there are people who have never seen Idris’ work is mind-boggling considering he’s starred in hit TV shows Luther and The Wire as well as appearing in major Hollywood movies including Mandela: Walk to Freedom and Marvel films like Thor and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Idris likes to be kept busy, and is glad he has so much work on the go at the moment.
“I can’t stand still. All the things I have been working on for the last two years come out at the same time,” he laughed. “It’s been two years of hard work and when you read off the list its like ‘Wow!’”
Topping it all off is being the first man to cover Maxim, which has only ever featured females in the past. Idris is thrilled that the publication has chosen him to make history for the title.
“It’s historical, it’s fresh, it marks a new way for the magazine to go,” he said.
