How the stars hooked up and split up in a decade when celebrities couldn't keep out of the headlines

SHOWBIZ stars, celebrities and the well known had their ups and downs in the Noughties just like everyone else.

From Gerry Ryan's split with his wife Morah in 2008 to Michael Flately's serial dating in 2000 we've got the low down on what the celebs were up to. (Our comprehensive 2009 review appears next week)


Big Brother hit our screens for the first time and Anna Nolan, who came second and confirmed she was lesbian. Richard Harris held his 70th birthday in Dublin, having filmed The Count of Monte Cristo here, while Bono hit the big 40. Pierce and Jamie Lee Curtis spent time filming big budget drama The Tailor of Panama in Ardmore studios.

Anna Friel filmed An Everlasting Peace here and dated Gavin Friday. Boyzone's Shane Lynch split up with Eternal's Easther Bennett, while Stephen Gately stepped out with Dutch man Eloy de Jong. Eddie Irvine split up with Anna Voorveld, while Andrea Roche parted ways with Jim Corr. Victoria Smurfit married Doug Baxter.

And Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got hitched too. One man who wouldn't be the father of any more children was Gerry Ryan, who had a vasectomy.


COLIN Farrell's lovelife hit the headlines for the first time in the Noughties when at the age of 25 he married his stunning 18-year-old
Amelia Warner in secret in July in Hawaii. But four months later Colin parted ways with the teenage beauty.

Pierce Brosnan, who spent much of the year filming Evelyn here, married Keely Shaye Smith in August in Ashford castle, Co Mayo. Daniel O'Donnell started going out with Scots divorcee Majella McLennan early in the year. Mary Harney got married in a registry office Brian Geoghegan, bringing forward their wedding to December.

Brian Dowling won Big Brother. Ken Doherty wed Australian sweetheart Sarah in Down Under. Dwight Yorke became a regular visitor to Dublin, as did his then girlfriend Jordan. Kerry Katona had her first baby, Molly, with Brian McFadden while Off the Rails star Fiona McShane had a baby boy.


HAPPIER DAYS: Brian and Kerry
There were several high profile weddings, none more so than John Magnier, who splashed out €3m for the wedding of his daughter Katie to horse trainer husband David Watchman near Coolmore, Co Tipperary, in August.

Also during that year Westlife singer Brian McFadden tied the knot with Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona at Rathnew, Co Meath; Paul McCartney and Heather Mills got married in Castleleslie, Co Monaghan; Grainne Seoige wed Stephen Cullinane in Galway; Daniel O'Donnell married Majella McLennan; Sarah Cox got hitched to DJ Jon Carter in Wicklow; Caroline Corr and Frank Woods married in Majorca; The Edge and American girlfriend Morleigh Steinberg had their ceremony in the south of France; and Today FM DJ Tom Dunne tied the know with love Audrey Nugent in New York.

Also on the love front dancer Michael Flatley got engaged to Lisa Murphy; Andrea Corr found love again with actor Shaun Evans; Boyzone's Shane Lynch got back together with Easther Bennett; Bono and his wife Ali Hewson celebrated their 20th anniversary; Jim Corr dated model Corina Grant; his ex Andrea Roche started going out with millionaire's son PJ Mansfield; Fun Lovin Criminals star Huey Morgan bedded local lapdancer Biliegene Finn; Liberty X star Tony Lundon fell for Belfast girl Kelly Ann Leathem; and Paul Harrington and Fair City actress Sorcha Furlong also fell in love.


Colin Farrell turned out to be the romancer of the year. He started out dating and snogging Britney Spears and ended 2003 with nocturnal trysts with Angelina Jolie.

And there was flings with Paris Hilton, fellow Alexander actress Rosario Dawson and several lapdancers and New York/L.A. cuties. And the bould Colin also became a father when his ex, Kim Bordenave, gave birth to baby James Padraig in September.

Celebrity Farm saw a love triangle between George McMahon,Tamara Gervasoni and Gavin Lambe Murphy (who later came out as gay).

Another TV show, You're A Star, saw love blossom between Susan McFadden and Michael Leonard. Andrea Corr and Samantha Mumba, turned to foreigners for love - Andrea dumped Englishman Giles Baxendale for a fellow Brit, Shaun Evans, while Sam parted ways with Dubliner Mark Henderson to begin dating American R&B singer Brian 'Drasco' Dinero.

After flings with D-Sides' Dane Guiden and Westlife's Kian Egan, Jodie Marsh began dating Fran Cosgrave. Kian started going with Jodi Albert, while Big Brother runner-up Ray Shah had some between the sheets fun with winner Kate Lawlor.

Robbie Keane became an item with Claudine Palmer, while Eddie Irvine ditched Miami girl Katherine Rice and at first turned to Donegal lass Michelle Doherty before settling on Olga Payola.

The biggest break-up of the year was Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Celia Larkin, which the Sunday World first exclusively revealed. Celia became 'friends' with cobbler John Rooney, but then proclaimed herself single.

Others who parted included Brian Ormond and Tara Byrne, Tommy Tiernan and Jayme Street (he began dating Yvonne McMahon), Sinead O'Connor and Nick Sommerlaud and Joe Elliot and Bobbie Jo Tolsma.

That summer saw the most hyped wedding of the year when Westlife's Nicky Byrne wed Georgina Byrne at a châteaux in France. Fellow Westlife star Shane Filan married Gillian Walsh in a more low key affair in Sligo that December. Others to tie the know included Ryanair's Michael O'Leary and banker Anita Farrell, TV3's Lorraine Keane and musician Peter Devlin, and TV3's Claire Byrne and producer Richard Johnston.

Liam Lawlor gave away his daughter Ciara, to Jim Langan, in Sicily, while Stephen Gately 'wed' Andy Cowles in Las Vegas. Lorraine Keane had a daughter with Peter Devlin, Kerry McFadden has her second daughter with Brian McFadden.

Those who gave birth for the first time included Cathy Kelly, Caroline Corr, Craig Doyle's wife Doon and Padraig Harrington's wife Caroline


AN ITEM: Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron
Brian McFadden and Kerry Katona's breakup was the big story of the year. At the beginning of 2004 Brian announced he was sensationally leaving Westlife on the eve of their world tour to spend more quality time with his family. But in September he announced he and Kerry were parting, though he soon began dating Australian Delta Goodrem, while Kerry later took up with Mark Croft.

Twink was at the centre of turbulence when her husband David Agnew left her for Ruth Hickey.

Among the weddings of year included Killian Murphy and Yvonne McGuinness, Louise Loughman and Stephen Byrne and Gay Byrne's daughter Crona and Philip Carney. TV shows again dominated with Chris Doran winning You're A Star Tabby O'Callaghan finishing third in the X Factor, as did Fran Cosgrave in I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here.

Stuart Townsend was the envy of many a man when he accompanied Charlize Theron to the Oscars, where she won Best Actress Award.


Taoiseach Bertie Ahern went public with his new love, Anna Bogle, when he brought her to the Neil Diamond concert in June, while is
ex, Miriam, stepped out with new beau, restaurateur Terry McCoy.

Glenda Gilson got back together with Brian O'Driscoll, with Snoop Dogg trying to woo her at the Meteor awards in February. Elle McPherson was linked to Colin Farrell, after the couple met while holidaying in the Bahamas.

Off The Rails star Pamela Flood began dating nightclub manager Michael Sharpe while footballer Dwight Yorke scored with local beauty Emma Wiston after meeting her in Dublin's Lillies Bordello. Fair City actor Dave Duffy (Leo) was revealed as dating country singer Helen McCabe.

Samantha Mumba split from her American rapper boyfriend Sisqo, but later that year became an item with English actor Charlie Porter.

Among the weddings were Marilyn Manson to Dita Von Teese in December Gurteen castle, Co Tipperary, while Louis Walsh turned down an invite to Jordan's big day with Peter Andre that September. Damien Rice had been linked to Renee Zelwegger, but she got hitched to Kenny Chesney, although they soon divorced.

Sile Seoige walked down the aisle in November with TG4 colleague Glen Mulcahy, while model Vivienne Connolly got married to Ben Dunne junior in December.

Summer weddings included Maura Derane's Rome blessing with Fine Gael TD John Deasy, actor Simon Delaney and Lisa Muddiman, footballer Keith O'Neill and Zoe Johnson, and model Corina Grant and Chris Doyle.

Two Irish stars 'came out' during the year: Westlife's Mark Feehily and singer Donna McCaul. Among those who had babies were Louise Loughman (her first), Dolores O'Riordan (third), Yvonne Keating (third) while Westlife star Shane Filan's wife Gillian gave birth to their first child, Nicole.

Kate Moss came to town and threw us out of her penthouse in the Clarence, while David Beckham's ex bit on the side, Rebecca Loos, went ballistic when we asked her about the footballer.


HITCHED: Michael Flatley and Niamh O’Brien
This was the year of high profile splits and none more so than Brian O'Driscoll and Glenda Gilson. The couple dated for nearly four years and sent shockwaves around town when they parted ways in the spring. Glenda was later linked to Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Stephen Dorff.

Michael Flatley set the pace in January when he parted ways with Lisa Murphy, but he made up ground when he wed fellow dancer Niamh O'Brien in August.

Lisa Murphy got together with Gerald Kean, who broke up with wife Clodagh. Ryan Tubridy split with his wife Ann Marie Power in February, while the same month saw Claire Byrne end her three year marriage to Richard Johnson. She soon began dating charity worker Jonathan Edgar.

Fran Cosgrave called off his engagement to Natasha Hamilton and Rosanna Davison ended her four year relationship with James Montgomery, but soon began dating Wesley Quirke.

Jim Corr broke up with his fiancé of two years, Gayle Williamson, while Brendan Courtney split from his partner of a year,Wayne Shines.

But there was romance and a string of high profile weddings too. Michael Flatley wed Niamh O'Brien, in Fermoy in October, while in August Andrea Roche and PJ Mansfield also got hitched.

Keith Barry wed Mairead Foley in May in Durrow, Co Laois, Jasmine Guinness walked down the aisle with lover Gawain Rainey in July in Leixlip, and Chris de Burgh's former nanny Maresa Morgan married her Dutch banker beau Harry Kybert in November in Co Galway.

Stephen Gately wed Andy Cowles in March in London. Also tying the knot were B*Witched stars Lindsey Armaou (to Lee Brennan) and Edele Lynch (to Michael Barret). Nadine Coyle had many a jealous onlooker by stepping out with Jesse Metcalfe, while Eddie Irvine bagged Pamela Anderson.

Colin Farrell reportedly had flings with Kate Moss and Serena Williams, while he also dated Lake Bell, but ended the year single.

Patrick Kielty had a brief fling with Emma Jane Power, while Westlife's Mark Feehily appeared for the first time in Ireland with boyfriend Kevin McDaid in Dublin in February.

On the baby front Twink's estranged husband David Agnew and musician Ruth Hickey had their first child, Jamie, in February.

Supermum and RTE presenter Miriam O'Callaghan gave birth to her eighth baby, also called Jamie. Our own Amanda Brunker and boyfriend Philip McLoughlin had their first child, Edward, in March.

Van Morrison and his lover of 13 years, Michelle Rocca, had their first child together, a girl, Aibhe.


Katy French became a star in 2007, a rollercoaster which kicked off in January when we announced she had got engaged for a second time to then fiancé Marcus Sweeney. She split with Marcus and then began secretly dating City West hotel figure Jim Mansfield junior. After a year of ups and down in the media PR stakes Katy sadly passed away that December.

JP McManus's only daughter Sue Ann wed Cian Foley in a €3m bash in Co Limerick in July, while Eva Birthistle tied the knot with English musician Raife Burchell. Shane Lynch went down the aisle a second time, when he married Sheena White in August in Kinitty castle, Co Offaly.

Andrea Corr split from actor Shaun Evans earlier in the year and began dating billionaire's son Brett Desmond. TV presenter Michelle Doherty split from rugby ace Denis Hickey in March, while Damien Duff also broke with girlfriend of three years Eileen Flanagan.

TV beauty Amanda Byram felt four years with cameraman Matt Voello was enough and Colin Farrell dated student Muireann McDonnell, though they drifted apart later in the year. Brian O'Driscoll hooked up with actress Amy Huberman.

Former Miss Ireland Sarah Morrissey started a long distance relationship with Derry goalkeeper PJ Jennings, while Frames singer Glen Hansard fell for Once star Marketa Irlova.

Samantha Mumba set tongues wagging with her latest boyfriend, American Torray Scales.

On the baby front, Georgina Ahern have birth in April to Rocco and Jay, Myleene Klass and Dublin fiancé Graham Smith produced their first offspring, Ava, while B*Witched singer Edel Lynch welcomed Ceol. Gerald Kean threw a sumptuous 50th birthday party with girlfriend Lisa Murphy in the Ritz Carlton, in the style of King Louis VV1 and Marie Antoinette.


The biggest shock showbiz story of the year locally was 2FM DJ and father of five Gerry Ryan splitting in March with his wife of 26 years, Morah.

Later in October we were first to reveal the shock jock was dating children's charity boss and former South African ambassador to Ireland, Melanie Verwoerd. Marriages that year included Robbie Keane to Claudine Palmer in Dalkey, Lucy Kennedy and Richard Governey in Italy in July.

Nicky Byrne celebrated his 30th birthday with guests including Ken Doherty and Ronan Keating. Failte Towers was a TV hit and saw contestants Claire Tully and Luke Thomas have a brief fling.

Colin Farrell found a new girlfriend with Emma Forest. Brian Ormond started dating Pippa O'Connor in January. Michelle Heaton made Ireland her home and began dating local advertising executive Hugh Hanley. Off The Rails presenter Pamela Flood, who parted ways with Michael Sharpe, but began dating restaurant owner Ronan Ryan.
