Gwyneth Paltrow: 'Divorce made me reassess everything I stood for'

Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow struggled to come to terms with the end of her marriage, as no-one in her immediate family had ever divorced.

The Shakespeare in Love actress and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin announced their "conscious uncoupling" in March, 2014, ending their 10-year marriage.

Gwyneth filed for divorce in April (15), but despite moving on to a new relationship with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, she admits she still struggles with the fact that her marriage failed, especially as none of her family had been in that position before.

"I am from a tribe of people who stay married," she told pal Nicole Richie at the Pearl xChange Q&A in Los Angeles on Sunday (08Nov15). "My parents stayed married until my dad died. I really don't come from a culture of divorce at all and I had very high hopes for what my life could be like."

Gwyneth, 43, and Chris have two children together; daughter Apple, 11, and son Moses, nine. The former couple are still on good terms for the sake of their offspring, but Gwyneth still finds it sad that she cannot provide the same home life for them as she enjoyed during her own childhood.

"I think that it was very difficult for me that I couldn't do that and that I wasn't able to be married to the father of my children for the rest of my life," she continued. "It was very challenging for me in terms of having to re-assess what that said about me, ideas that I had about that kind of failure. Luckily my ex-husband is an incredibly good ex-husband and an amazing dad."

Chris, 38, has also opened up about his relationship with his ex this week (beg09Nov15), telling Australian radio station 2DayFM’s Rove and Sam that he was in a "low place" after their divorce.

"(The split allowed me to) figure out where I've gone wrong in my way of looking at the world,” he said. "A few years ago I was in a low place in my life and was feeling kind of down and confused. Some friends gave me a book and a poem and those two things started me off on this whole journey where I just feel so happy to be alive."
