Eva Mendes: My family are a raucous crew

Eva Mendes loves nothing better than hearing her family yell “like a bunch of hyenas” as they look after her daughter.

The 41-year-old actress and her partner Ryan Gosling are parents to 12-month-old Esmeralda. Becoming a mother has brought Eva closer to her family, who can’t get enough of the little girl.

“When my mom and sisters visit, they take over the house. They take my baby! They start cleaning everything! They sound like a bunch of hyenas, yelling in Spanish, English, Spanglish,” she laughed to Glam Belleza Latina magazine.

Having the whole family in her home might be a whirlwind, but it’s reminded Eva of exactly how she wants to raise her child. That means as much music as possible, something which she didn’t realise meant so much to her until she heard her loved ones serenading her baby.

“They sing [my daughter Esmeralda] all these Cuban nursery songs that I forgot my mom used to sing to me,” she explained. “They’re like a raucous crew… It’s incredible. I really appreciate my family, now more than ever. I’m so happy that my little girl gets to grow up with this.”

Eva and Ryan are famously tight-lipped about their romance, which began when they worked on 2012’s The Place Beyond the Pines together. Staying true to herself, the star didn’t let slip any titbits about what her partner is like as a father, preferring to stick to the safer topic of work.

As well as being a successful actress, Eva models and has fashion and beauty lines. All of that means a great deal to her, but it’s being able to speak to her fans via social media which she loves the most. The star joined photo-sharing site Instagram in March and it’s become a big part of her life.

“That is 100 per cent me,” she said of her posts. “It actually breaks my heart when I can’t respond. I love connecting with women; it’s fun for me. I come from a huge family of women, and I’m super close to the girlfriends I’ve had since I was 12 years old.”
