Ellen Page: My life is amazing
Ellen Page “couldn’t be happier” with life now that she has come out as gay.
The 28-year-old actress announced her sexuality during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign's Time to Thrive conference in February 2014.
She is in a relationship with Samantha Thomas and says her public outing and happy romance have contributed to her positive attitude towards her new life.
“I'm a woman who loves women, and that's a huge part of who I am,” Ellen told the New York Daily News. “(So now) I couldn't be happier living my life.”
Ellen first made a name for herself starring in indie movie Juno back in 2007. Since then she has had roles in films including Inception and her latest, Freeheld, which focuses on a police lieutenant and her registered domestic partner. When Laurel Hester, played by Julianne Moore, is diagnosed with terminal cancer, she and her partner Stacie Andree, played by Ellen, face a fight to secure Laurel's pension benefits.
When the opportunity to play a gay character came up, Ellen jumped at the chance. And she is thrilled that she did.
"It's a film about (being told) no because you're gay," Ellen said. "Obviously as a gay woman I connected to the material."
Ellen may have taken her time before revealing herself as gay publicly. But she admits she knew she didn’t like boys from a pretty young age.
"I remember seeing But I'm a Cheerleader when I was 14, and there's this scene where Natasha Lyonne's boyfriend kisses her and everyone around her is 'Oh, you're so lucky!' and she's like, 'I don't get it,'" she continued. "And I remember thinking, 'Man, that's how I feel, too. Boys - I don't get it.'"
Ellen is now a campaigner for equality for people of all sexualities. However, she knows she has a long way to go.
“There's still prejudice," she said "They'll say, 'I don't mind gay people as long as they don't flaunt it.' Oh, so you're not homophobic as long as we're not visible?"
