Eddie Redmayne: 'Fatherhood is utterly extraordinary'

Eddie Redmayne has opened up about first time fatherhood, admitting it's "utterly extraordinary".

The 34-year-old Oscar winner started his family in June (16) after his wife Hannah gave birth to their daughter Iris Mary, now seven weeks old.

Eddie spoke for the first time about his "wonderful" new role at the Omega House Olympics opening night party in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday (07Aug16), as the family all visited South America together for the first time.

Asked if he was enjoying being a father he told British magazine Hello!: 'Well, it's only seven weeks in, but it's amazing. It's wonderful. All of the stuff you've heard for years, it's all true but utterly extraordinary."

Eddie was invited to attend the Rio Olympics in his role as as brand ambassador for watch brand and game sponsors Omega. And Eddie happily accepted the invitation to bring Hannah and baby Iris along too.

"I've never been to South America. The notion of coming to Brazil and Rio was extraordinary," he smiled to Hello. "And the idea of bringing Iris on her first trip abroad to the Olympics in Brazil was too much of an extraordinary opportunity to turn down."

The Theory of Everything star and his PR executive wife Hannah welcomed baby Iris on 15 June. The couple wed at Babington House in Somerset just before Christmas 2014 and confirmed they were expecting a baby in January (16).

Eddie added he was looking forward to cheering on Team GB stars Tom Daley - who won bronze in the synchronised diving competition - and heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill at the Olympics.
