Drew Barrymore: My parents were hippies
Drew Barrymore isn't sure where her business acumen has come from, as her parents had "no work ethic".
The actress is incredibly successful, having overcome drug problems to appear in films like Miss You Already and He's Just Not That Into You. She also runs cosmetics line Flower Beauty, produces movies and raises daughters Olive, three, and Frankie, 18 months, with her husband Will Kopelman.
"My parents were both total hippies. They had no work ethic," she admitted to Britain's Hello! magazine. "But I've had to really figure out how it works with children because they come first, so it's been a shift for me, but a very easy shift."
With two such young kids at home, taking a step back from work was a natural decision. It means movies are no longer at the forefront, but that sits well with Drew.
"I've put films aside for a while as my kids grow up," she explained. "My choice to work less, for me feels like no sacrifice at all. I've worked my entire life and I wouldn't trade time with my children. Film was a really good springboard for me to do things I really wanted to do in life."
It's true that Drew has had a long run in the industry, appearing in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial when she was just seven. Despite deciding to calm down her career, she did film Miss You Already when Frankie was just five months old. It was a tough decision, but the star knew she had to tell the story of two best friends helping each other through hard times in their lives.
"I'm so relieved I did it," she smiled. "It's better than I ever hoped."
