Drew Barrymore: I lied to Spielberg!

Drew Barrymore lied her “face off” when she auditioned for Steven Spielberg aged just six, telling him she was a rock star.

The 40-year-old actress shot to fame in the iconic sci-fi movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982, which was directed by the filmmaker. However, she first met Steven when she tried out for a part in Poltergeist and although she didn’t land the role, she went to great lengths to impress him with her cheeky personality.

“I lied to him,” Drew laughed during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will air on Friday (06Nov15). “I lied my face off. I told him I was in a rock and roll band. And that I was a cook.”

The actress channelled her childhood hero, the plucky Pippi Longstocking, for the meeting and obviously left a lasting impression. Steven went on to cast her as the adorable Gertie in a movie called This Boy’s Life, which later landed the title of E.T. and launched her successful career in Hollywood.

“I sold myself and told my little stories,” Drew said. “He was like, ‘Ya know what? You’re not right for this,’ and I was like ‘Uh! Ok,’ and he's like, ‘but I’m making another movie and I think you should come audition for that.'”

Drew was talking about her life experiences to promote her memoir Wildflower. She had a well-publicised tumultuous childhood, with her parents parting ways while her mother was pregnant and Drew later seeking emancipation from them when she was 14.

“At the time it was a really necessary thing for me and my mom and we were actually incredibly gracious about it with each other,” the actress explained.

Drew raises two daughters, three-year-old Olive and Frankie, 18 months, with her husband Will Kopelman and has learnt a lot since she became a mum. In her memoirs, Drew writes that “some people aren’t meant to be parents” and she has some sad memories of her father growing up.

While Ellen referred to Drew’s dad as a “very free spirit”, the actress admitted they didn’t have a close relationship. “He was very charismatic and odd and I just appreciated him from afar,” she explained.
