Domhnall Gleeson in awe of co-star Saoirse
Film star Domhnall Gleeson wouldn’t dare offer his younger co-star Saoirse Ronan acting advice, because she’s already been nominated for so many awards.
The actor stars alongside the Oscar-nominated actress in the new movie Brooklyn, an adaptation of the much-loved Colm Tóibín novel. Although at 32 Domhnall may be more than a decade older than Saoirse, he never thought about handing down any acting tips following the critical acclaim for her performance in movies such as Atonement, Hanna and The Lovely Bones.
“(Did I ever give any advice) to Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan?” Domhnall laughed in an interview with Esquire magazine. “Imagine: I’d sidle up to give her advice and she’d just take her nomination plaque out of her bag and say, ‘Maybe tell my friend?’”
Domhnall has enjoyed a successful career himself, appearing in the Harry Potter franchise, and can soon be seen in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens as well as The Revenant alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. As the son of lauded actor Brendan Gleeson, Domhnall has never relied on his famous father to land work – but also insists he isn’t embarrassed by his Hollywood connection.
“You know, I’ve never felt penned in by that,” he replied when asked how it feels to have entered the same industry as his dad. “I’m proud of my father and his work, so I’m happy whenever anybody associates us. I feel very lucky.”
Domhnall plays the villainous General Hux in the Star Wars movie, and although he is excited by the role he was reluctant to give much away, refusing to reveal if he gets to wield the famous lightsaber in the film. The actor says playing Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise was good preparation for joining another iconic film series. When asked if he ever thought about sneaking props home from the set of Harry Potter, Domhnall admitted it was tempting – but he’s now glad he managed to resist.
“I thought about it,” he recalled. “But all I could remember was one day leaving the Harry Potter set and noticing this massive tailback on the motorway – all because a wand had gone missing. They’d stopped traffic! You don’t want to be that guy.”
