Dax Shepard: 'Molestation turned me into an addict'

Actor Dax Shepard went "insane" for over a decade after being molested as a child.

The 41-year-old This Is Where I Leave You star revealed all about his dark past during a chat on Sirius XM radio programme The Jason Ellie Show, explaining he was touched inappropriately by an 18-year-old neighbour when he was just seven.

Shepard went on to admit that although he believed the event was "minimal" in comparison to other stories of sexual abuse, the impact was severe on his psyche.

"It took me 12 years to tell anyone," he shared, "and then, all that time, I was like... 'It's my fault', as generic as that is... and 'I'm gay, I must have manifested this because I'm secretly gay'. I had all these insane thoughts for 11 years or 12 years."

Shepard struggled with drug addiction and alcoholism before becoming sober in 2004, and he recently had a breakthrough on the potential cause of his substance abuse issues.

During a conversation he had with his mother, a court-appointed foster children advocate, she told him most victims of molestation end up becoming chronic drug and alcohol users.

"If you've been molested, you only have a 20 per cent chance of not being an addict," he said of the statistic she shared with him. "I was like, 'Hmm, interesting', because in my mind I just like to have a f**king great time. But when you hear a statistic like that, I'm like, 'Oh no, I was going to be an addict, period.'"

Shepard's life has transformed tremendously since his troubled youth and he is now happily married to actress Kristen Bell, the mother of his two daughters, Lincoln, three, and Delta, 16 months.
