David Beckham thought he was 'past his sell by date'

David Beckham thought he was too much "past his sell by date" to be crowned the Sexiest Man Alive.

The retired soccer superstar, 40, can't believe he was awarded this year's accolade by PEOPLE magazine as he thought his age would shrink his chances of winning.

Taking to his Facebook account, he wrote: "I thought I was past my sell by date but thanks to for the accolade and the compliment! I always feel a little shy when receiving these Awards, though it will make my Mum happy.(sic)"

However, the handsome star is convinced his children Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 13, Cruz, 10, and four-year-old Harper will chuckle at his magazine cover shoot when they see it because, he believes, he looks vastly different in comparison to when he first wakes up in the mornings.

He added: "This one the kids will laugh at, as they see what Daddy looks like in the morning!"

Meanwhile, David has admitted his wife Victoria "wasn't a fan" when he sported a ponytail, while the fashion designer insisted she thinks he always makes great wardrobe choices.

She told the magazine: "David has good taste. I like the way he dresses. He's naturally very stylish."

And the former Spice Girls singer thinks her spouse has "fantastic abs" and that "all of his tattoos are beautiful."
