Damian Lewis: 'There's no formula to juggling acting and family'

Damian Lewis doesn't know the secret to combining life as an actor with raising a family.

The Homeland star is married to Peaky Blinders actress Helen McCrory and the couple has two children, 10-year-old daughter Manon and eight-year-old son Gulliver. With both Damian and Helen being successful actors, they're no strangers to the pressures of combining acting with family life.

They also have the added stress of the filming of the second series of Damian's Wall Street drama Billions keeping him in New York rather than the family's north London home.

When asked in an interview how he balances his transatlantic career and family life, the actor told London's Evening Standard newspaper that there's no great secret.

“We just muddle along - there’s no formula. We take it week by week and month by month and day by day. It’s a great adventure," he told the publication. "We’re always busy but it’s always fun. You just have to hope your kids don’t ask for a lot of expensive therapy when they’re 18!"

The 45-year-old who married wife Helen in 2007 revealed the couple each let the other get on with the job of parenting, and avoid interfering too much.

“We are quite careful about offering too much advice,” he smiled. “We do cautiously help each other out.”

Damian spoke to the publication as it was announced he will play the role of Martin in Edward Albee's Tony Award-winning play The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? later this year (16). He recalled attending the play's premiere at London's Almeida Theatre in 2004, when Game of Thrones actor Jonathan Pryce starred as Martin.

“It was one of the most fascinating nights I’ve ever had in a theatre. The play stayed with me. The absurd central premise is on the face of it ludicrous, and funny, and awful," he recalled.

“But what emerges through the play is that it’s about different expressions of love and ideas of forbidden love.
