Chelsea Handler on off limits jokes
Chelsea Handler sees ugly children and death as off limits joke wise.
The talk show host and comedian is famed for saying pretty much whatever she wants, although there are some issues which are a step too far for her.
“Well, I don’t think it’s nice to make fun of ugly children – that’s just kind of really mean,” she told Britain’s Heat magazine. “Or people that are dying. I mean, obviously, it can be funny way after somebody’s dead, but if somebody is actually dying, I think that’s off limits. So: ugly babies and death.”
Aside from that, Chelsea sees life as an open playing field. Some comedians prefer not to wade into political debate or be overly critical of others, but that is never going to cut it for the 40-year-old star.
“I think in order to have honest conversations you have to put it out there,” she said. “I mean, you know as an interviewer, that it’s not interesting for people to not talk about real stuff or what their opinions are. Being politically correct all the time is boring.”
On top of this, Chelsea won’t be bullied into apologising for jokes just because some have found them offensive. It’s something she feels strongly about, and she’s yet to say something she regrets enough to withdraw.
“I think if you start apologising a) you have to apologise every time, and b) be smart enough to say something that doesn’t warrant an apology,” she noted. “You have to be thoughtful about what you’re saying. You can push boundaries, but you can’t be completely disrespectful.
“I just choose not to go down that road. I just won’t. God forbid I ever say something terrible maybe I’ll change my mind. But in my opinion, as long as I’m OK with it, I’m not going to kowtow to people that are expecting an apology from me.”
