Carey Mulligan: Egomaniacs are nightmare co-stars

Carey Mulligan wouldn’t be able to work with an egomaniac.

She appears alongside the gorgeous Matthias Schoenaerts in the re-telling of Thomas Hardy’s classic tale Far from the Madding Crowd. On screen they play lovers and off set they also got on famously.

“I think we’ve both just managed to stay really down to earth,” Carey mused to German magazine Maxi. “That’s why we get on so well. It would be a huge problem if I had to deal with an egomaniac on set! You should never confuse the amount you’re being paid with the amount of talent you have.”

It helps that both Carey and Matthias are huge romantics and therefore really jumped on board with the storyline about unrequited love and finding your soulmate. The film also focuses on taking your life into your own hands, which caused the stars to reflect on how theirs have panned out.

“I’ve always tried to make the most of the opportunities given to me,” Carey explained. “And I’ve always thought it important to treat others well. Those are pretty much the only things you have any control over.”

Matthias added: “I do believe you are in control of your own life. But in terms of how much is already in the hands of fate – I’m not sure!”

Carey also reveals that being honest is one of the most important parts of her life philosophy, with her co-star agreeing.
