Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie 'fought' over the years

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie "fought a lot over the years".

The 'Fury' star and the 'By The Sea' actress were together for 12 years until the 41-year-old actress filed for divorce on Monday (20.09.16) but they reportedly "disagreed about many things" throughout their relationship.

A source told Us Weekly magazine: "They came so close to this before. They fought a lot over the years and disagreed about many things.

"The fighting got worse and they disagreed a lot about parenting and a lot of things. She did try to make it work, but her kids come first and she couldn't let them see mommy and daddy like this."

Meanwhile, it was previously claimed that the couple - who have Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, eight, together - had been struggling for a while.

A source said: "I could say the divorce announcement is a shock, but it's not. This divorce deal has been brewing for a long time.

"When Angelina underwent her mastectomy in 2013, her health and life in general became a priority for her. Her views on life changed. Suddenly she saw herself walking in her late mother's shoes - and she was no longer that wild, fun loving woman she used to be, she was taking things a lot more seriously.

"Brad was supportive, and wanted to be there for her, so they decided to marry - more for the sake of their six children than themselves. They wanted the kids to have the security of knowing their parents were committed because they had been very affected by their mom's ill health."
