Benedict Cumberbatch: Am I Bond ready?
British star Benedict Cumberbatch doubts he has what it takes to play James Bond.
Playing detective Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV series has earned the British actor fans around the globe, as have stints in the movies Star Trek: Into Darkness and The Imitation Game.
Following reports that fellow Brit Daniel Craig won't be returning as the 007 spy following the release of the new film Spectre later this month (Oct15), the hunt for a new Bond could be on. Benedict's name has been thrown into the mix, but he isn't confident.
"I can wear a suit and I can fight," he told reporters on the red carpet of the UK premiere of his movie Black Mass on Sunday night (11Oct15). "I can raise my eyebrow but that's not what it takes to play Bond."
While he believes it would be fun, Benedict thinks producers behind the franchise could be heading in a new direction with the action films.
His close pal Tom Hiddleston has also shown interest in portraying the slick spy, recently telling the BBC that it would be a huge privilege. However he'd never attempt to outdo all the hard work Daniel has put into the franchise with his flicks Skyfall, Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale.
Daniel himself appears to have washed his hands of the iconic part though and made a drastic comment during an interview with Time Out London magazine last week (beg05Oct15).
"I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists (than play Bond again)," the 47-year-old told the publication. "We’re done. All I want to do is move on."
He added the only reason he'd sign on to do another feature would be for the money. While he's contracted for one more film, Daniel revealed he can't predict whether he will take part.
